Use a Custom Domain With Gmail Without Workspace (2027)

Updated 2026-10-03 · by Adam Hale

You can still use a custom domain with Gmail without Workspace in 2027, but the popular free recipe half-breaks. Forwarding your domain's mail into Gmail keeps working; sending as you@yourdomain.com through Gmail's "Send mail as" ends in January 2027. To keep going, you need your own outbound SMTP for the domain, plus a way to use it from wherever you write.

What breaks, and what keeps working

Keeps working: incoming mail. Domain forwarders such as Cloudflare Email Routing (free), ImprovMX (free plan: 1 domain, 25 aliases, 500 forwards a day), Forward Email's free tier and registrar forwarding keep delivering to your Gmail inbox. Google says forwarding into Gmail "is independent of Gmail's 'Send as' feature and does not affect it" (Gmail Help 17101213).

Breaks: the "Send mail as" entry for your domain. A custom domain whose mailbox isn't hosted by Google counts as third-party. That's true even if you set it up through smtp.gmail.com with a Gmail app password. Once the alias is gone, that route goes too: as far as we know, Gmail's SMTP rewrites the From address to your Gmail address unless the address is a verified Send-as alias (not re-tested by us).

Step 1: get outbound SMTP for your domain

Option Cost Sending limit Notes
Brevo Free 300/day Built for transactional and marketing mail
SMTP2GO Free 1,000/month, 200/day
Mailjet Free 6,000/month, 200/day
Resend Free 3,000/month, 100/day, 3 domains
Mailgun Free 100/day, 1 domain
ImprovMX Light $50/yr 750 sends/month The free plan has no SMTP
Forward Email Enhanced $3/mo Reputation-based The free tier can't send
Purelymail $10/yr Full mailbox
Migadu Micro $19/yr 20 outbound/day Full mailbox, unlimited domains
Zoho Mail Lite $1/user/mo The free plan has no IMAP or SMTP
Cloudflare Email Sending Needs Workers Paid, $5/mo 3,000/month included, then $0.35 per 1,000 Public beta

Every option needs DNS records on your domain: SPF and DKIM to prove the sender is allowed, and DMARC is recommended. The free SMTP guide walks through them. Amazon SES no longer has a dedicated free tier for new accounts, as covered there.

(our estimate) The free senders are designed for app and marketing mail. Low-volume personal replies seem to be tolerated, since none of the terms pages we read ban them. Still, expect a suspension if recipients mark your mail as spam.

Step 2: choose where you write

Use custom domain with Gmail without Workspace in 2027: setups by situation

Situation Setup Yearly cost
Lowest cost, write on a computer Cloudflare Email Routing to Gmail, Brevo or SMTP2GO free SMTP, SendAs Relay free (1 address) $0 plus your domain
Also need to send from your phone Purelymail or Migadu mailbox forwarding into Gmail; add the mailbox in the Gmail app; extension or Thunderbird on desktop $10–19
Want it native and hands-off Google Workspace Business Starter $84 per user (annual plan)
Ready to leave Gmail Fastmail Individual $60

The fair case for Workspace

Workspace Business Starter costs $7 per user per month on an annual plan, or $8.40 on a flexible one (Workspace pricing). In return you get native Gmail with your domain, Send as that keeps working, the mobile apps and no extra tools. You can add up to 20 domain aliases to an account (Workspace FAQ for multiple domains).

The catch: it's a separate Google account from your personal @gmail.com one, and $84 a year per user is more than many people want to pay for a personal domain.

About Google's warning

Google advises caution with "third-party tools or browser extensions that offer to replicate 'Send as'" because they often need your credentials. With a free sender such as Brevo or SMTP2GO, the credential is a dedicated SMTP login, separate from your account password, that you can revoke on its own. That is less sensitive than a full mailbox password. Whatever you use, store it somewhere you control.

How SendAs Relay fits

SendAs Relay adds a From picker to Gmail on the web (desktop) in Firefox 140+ and Edge 137+. When you pick you@yourdomain.com, the message goes out through the SMTP server you configured for it (Brevo, SMTP2GO, Mailjet, Resend, Mailgun, Purelymail, Migadu, paid Zoho, paid Forward Email or paid ImprovMX) via a stateless relay. Gmail doesn't send it.

Pick something else if you need to send from your phone (a mailbox host plus the Gmail app), use Chrome, or want zero moving parts (Workspace). Free covers one address; Pro, for more addresses, is planned at $19/year (pricing).
